For many years weddings have been very much set piece events, following a series of customs which, in many cases, were established literally hundreds of years ago. The central figure in the wedding, much to the chagrin of many grooms, is of course the bride adorned in all her finery in a magnificent white wedding dress, complete with veil and train. But things are changing.

Today more and more couples are choosing to move away from the customs and traditions of the past and are very much putting their own stamp on their wedding. The growing feeling is that weddings should be uniquely memorable one-of-a-kind days that portray the personalities and lifestyles of the bride and groom and their families and friends. This means, amongst other things, dispensing with the old fashioned white wedding dress and often moving towards an informal wedding dress.

If you are going to get married, tradition requires certain etiquette. The wedding dress is one such traditional item with different meanings through the world.

In western modern tradition, the color of western-culture wedding dresses is white. Used in this sense, ‘white’ or ‘wedding white’ includes creamy shades such as eggshell, ecru and ivory. The popularity of this color can be traced back to 1840 and the marriage of Queen Victoria. The Queen chose to wear a white gown for the event. The official wedding portrait photograph was widely published and many brides opted for a similar dress in honor of that choice.

Tips and Tricks on Finding the Perfect Wedding Dress for You

One of the biggest decisions you will face as the big day approaches is choosing the perfect wedding dress. The process of shopping for a wedding dress can be a fabulous adventure, but it can also be stressful and overwhelming–particularly because a bride-to-be often starts shopping for her gown before many other details are determined. You might have had a clear mental picture of the perfect wedding dress ever since you were five years old. On the other hand, you may have no idea what you are going to wear or feel strange about the idea of wearing white. The important thing is to relax, and remember that there are as many different kinds of dresses out there as there are different kinds of brides.

Plan Ahead Take a few minutes to think about what you want. It will be helpful when you enter the maze of wedding dresses out there to know what your budget is, any details that are essential (i.e. I must have a full skirt, or my arms must be covered), and an idea of how traditional you want your dress to be. After all, if really a teal pantsuit would work best for you, it’s probably not worth your time to sort through racks of flouncy white gowns.

By cheap wedding gowns we don’t mean tacky, but an inexpensive wedding dress that’s beautiful.

There are many wedding dress designs. You can find casual or formal, long or short, one-piece or two-piece, vintage or modern bridal dresses.

Your wedding dress doesn’t even have to be white. These days there are more colored ones available. In fact, white bridal gowns didn’t even become the thing until the mid nineteenth century. Before that it was the color of your choice for your bridal gown.

Ideas and Tips for a Magical Winter Wedding Theme

In the movies, everyone seems to get married in June. But a winter wedding can be terribly glamorous, cinematic and magical. With the right elements, your winter wedding will be a wonderland.

Attire for Your Winter Wedding
Think about you and your sweetie in the elegant look of old Hollywood; the groom in tails, and the bride in a white long silk dress with a white fur or faux fur wrap. Evoke the season with “ice” –diamond or diamond-like jewelry. 90% of wedding dresses are strapless or sleeveless, but that’s not so practical for a bride who wants to take pictures outside, or needs to walk any distance. Look for wraps, shrugs, and capes, or dramatic coats. I’ve always loved the look of a bride in a white dress and a large red shawl, huddled against her groom who has a red boutonnière.

And don’t forget your bridesmaids! An attractive wrap to wear on the day of your wedding and beyond makes a great bridesmaid present.

Bridal Boutique Expectations and Tips

Visiting bridal boutiques can be a new experience unlike any you’ve experienced. Here are some tips to help set your expectations:

1 Making Appointments
Once you’re ready to try on dresses, make appointments with bridal boutiques. Don’t be shy about asking if they carry a particular designer or if they have dresses within your budget. Most bridal boutiques will carry dresses that are in the $1,000 and under range. There are upscale bridal boutiques that offer designer/couture dresses that begin in the $3,000 range and go quite a bit higher.

Allocate approximately 1-2 hours per visit. Some boutiques are extremely busy on the weekends and may only give you an hour with their sales person. If you have the time on the weekdays, it’s a good idea to schedule your visit during this time. Bridal shops are generally not as busy on weekdays and are more generous with their time.

Men’s Formal Wear

APPROPRIATE ATTIRE
The groom and groomsmen attire should be tied into the formality of the wedding, as well as the time of day and season. A casual, garden wedding at high noon in mid-August may not be the best setting for a black wool tuxedo. A navy, lightweight blazer and linen slacks would be more appropriate, both for fashion and comfort.

BASIC FORMALWEAR “TERMS-OF-ART”
Ascot: Also referred to as a cravat; double-knot tie with wide ends that fold over the chest and is fastened with a stickpin. Usually worn with a winged-collar tuxedo shirt and a cutaway or morning coat; this look is most appropriate for a very formal morning wedding.

Winter Weddings…what a thought! Its just turning to fall and the wind is howling and the rain is battering. Not weather you would even consider weddingyish, huh?
Don’t think of the howling winds though. Instead imagine snow covered mountain peaks rising majestically from fir tree covered foothills. Close your eyes and take a deep breathe in the crisp, pine scented air. That is what a winter wedding is all about!

Imagine the ski lodge in the distance with its welcoming real woodburning fire, the winter sun sparkling off the crisp white snow and the sky as blue as can be. You are assured a day of fairytale proportions.

When it comes to your color scheme think red and green. Not Santa suit and holly leaves, but rich burgundy or plum and a forest green that the pine trees would be proud of. Think fur hats and mufflers with black boots and long coats. Think traditional and old fashioned.
