In western modern tradition, the color of western-culture wedding dresses is white. Used in this sense, ‘white’ or ‘wedding white’ includes creamy shades such as eggshell, ecru and ivory. The popularity of this color can be traced back to 1840 and the marriage of Queen Victoria. The Queen chose to wear a white gown for the event. The official wedding portrait photograph was widely published and many brides opted for a similar dress in honor of that choice.

The tradition continues today. Prior to the Victorian era a bride was married in any color except black (the color of mourning) or red (which was connected with prostitutes). The white dress came to symbolize purity of heart and the innocence of childhood. Later attribution suggested that the color white symbolized virginity which is false. However, it was originally the color that was connected to purity.

Many wedding dresses in China are colored red, the traditional color of good luck. In modern Chinese weddings, particularly in Western countries, the bride usually opts for the white Western dress or changes from a red gown to a white gown later in the day. In other eastern countries, such as Laos, it is customary for the bride to change apparel up to fifteen times within the night, each dress being a different color. Regardless, if you see a Chinese wedding in which the bride is wearing red, it does not mean she is a prostitute!

In northern parts of India the traditional color of women’s wedding garments is red. It is considered a color symbolizing auspiciousness. Nowadays many women opt not to wear red, and choose other colors. South Indian weddings traditionally use white or cream colored saris. Indian brides in Western countries often wear the sari at the wedding ceremony and change into traditional Indian wear afterwards (like leghna, choli, et cetera).

Now, there are approximately 2.4 million weddings performed each year. The average wedding costs about thirty thousand dollars. The average wedding dress will cost between one and three thousand dollars. However, prices for the wedding dress range from a few hundred dollars to practically as much as you can spend. One of the biggest decisions you will face as the big day approaches is choosing the perfect wedding dress. The process of shopping for a wedding dress can be a fabulous adventure, but it can also be stressful and overwhelming–particularly because a bride-to-be often starts shopping for her gown before many other details are determined. You might have had a clear mental picture of the perfect wedding dress ever since you were five years old. On the other hand, you may have no idea what you are going to wear or feel strange about the idea of wearing white. Plan Ahead Take a few minutes to think about what you want. Be Comfortable! On your wedding day, you’ll want to look great, but you’ll also want to be comfortable- it will be hard to pose for all those pictures, dance, laugh and more if you’re tugging your dress up or have boning jutting into your ribs. First- consider which wedding dress is most appropriate to your day – for example- consider a shorter tea-length or cocktail length dress for a beach wedding. If you’re the kinda gal who likes to dance with her hands in the air, and anticipates doing the limbo, perhaps a strapless dress is not the one for you. Look for wedding dresses with removable sleeves or straps to give you the widest range of options.

A Dress that Fits Your Body Well Think about your body type and what kinds of dresses generally look good on you. Take a look at what you regularly wear that makes you feel confident and beautiful, and then look for a wedding dress with similar lines. If a friend is making your wedding dress, ensure that you have agreed on a fitting schedule and chances to make adjustments. If you’re looking for a bargain at a sample sale, or discount outlet, you should budget money for taking the dress to a good tailor. Many designers will ask for three fittings, and will closely tailor your wedding dress to fit you.

Saving Money on Your Wedding Dress If money is an issue, remember that the most expensive kind of dress is not necessarily the best kind. Many brides find a bridesmaids dress in white or off-white that works perfectly, and is hundreds of dollars cheaper. There are thousands of dresses to be had at sample sales, thrift stores, and ebay. Consider taking pictures from magazines to a friend who sews or seamstress and getting a price quote. If you choose to make your own dress, don’t delay. • Look in magazines to get ideas from wedding dress designers…if you sew this would help you a lot.
• If you’ve picked a simple wedding dress or a short wedding dress, you can make a tulle apron very inexpensively to wear over the skirt. Do this by gathering tulle and sewing ribbon on for a waistband to tie into a bow. A long tulle apron over a short skirt is very pretty. Ask at the fabric store, what amount of material you need. Tulle is very cheap.
• You don’t even have to hem tulle. You can leave it as is or cut around the bottom with scalloped scissors.
• Sew a two-piece dress by making a top from your choice of fabric or buying a top. The skirt can be made from about five layers of tulle. Gather, add a waistband and wear a slip underneath.
• Check out the mall department stores. You might find (not in the wedding dress department) the perfect dress for you. There may be some cocktail dresses, formal dresses or prom dresses on sale.
• Then there are new and used as well as vintage bridal gowns on eBay.com You can find some great dresses for very little money here. You do need to check back often, though. You might find a simple dress that you can add to or alter. Or you might find exactly what you’re looking for as long as you are willing to be patient and keep checking back. It is worth the effort.
• Don’t forget wedding dress rentals.
• Wearing your mother’s or grandmother’s wedding dress is a very nice thing to do.
